Precautions for epoxy floor construction in winter

With the arrival of winter, the temperature gradually drops, and the construction of epoxy flooring also faces many challenges. The low temperature environment has a significant impact on the performance of epoxy floor materials, construction technology and final floor quality. Therefore, when carrying out epoxy floor construction in winter, a series of measures must be taken to ensure the construction quality and effect. The following is a detailed explanation of the precautions for epoxy floor construction in winter.

1. Construction environment control

1. Temperature management

The first task during winter construction is to ensure that the temperature of the construction environment is appropriate. Epoxy floor materials have certain requirements for construction temperature, usually above 5°C. Therefore, construction should be avoided as much as possible during low temperature periods (such as before 10 a.m. and after 3 p.m.). If construction must be carried out during low-temperature periods, this can be achieved by increasing the indoor temperature, such as turning on heating or using equipment such as electric heaters. In the northern region, many factories have heating facilities, and the heating supply can be turned on before and during construction to ensure that the temperature of the construction environment meets the requirements.

2. Humidity control

In addition to temperature, humidity is also an important factor affecting the quality of epoxy floor construction. Excessive humidity will cause water vapor to condense on the floor surface, thus affecting the drying and curing of the coating. Therefore, during winter construction, you should pay close attention to the humidity of the construction environment. If you encounter weather such as fog, frost or snow, construction should be avoided. At the same time, the floor surface should be thoroughly dried before construction to ensure that no moisture remains.

2. Material preparation and proportioning

1. Material heating

In low temperature environments in winter, the viscosity of epoxy floor materials will increase, thus affecting its construction performance. Therefore, before construction, materials can be placed in a closed room in advance, and equipment such as air conditioning or electric heating can be used to heat the materials. This reduces the viscosity of the material and improves its workability. However, it should be noted that the heating temperature should not be too high to avoid damaging the properties of the material.

2. Material ratio

The construction of epoxy flooring involves the mixing of multiple materials, such as epoxy resin, curing agent, thinner, etc. During winter construction, the proportions should be strictly followed according to the construction instructions to ensure that the proportions of various materials are accurate. At the same time, since the properties of materials will change in low-temperature environments, appropriate adjustments may be required in the actual ratio. For example, the amount of curing agent can be appropriately increased to increase the curing speed of the coating.

3. Construction process control

1. Basic treatment

The construction of epoxy flooring has high requirements on the base layer. The base layer must be clean, smooth, free of oil stains, and free of loose particles. During winter construction, the drying speed of the base layer will slow down due to lower temperatures. Therefore, the base layer should be thoroughly dried before construction and ensure that no moisture remains on the surface of the base layer. At the same time, parts that are damaged, sandy, cracked, hollow, etc. must be thoroughly polished to a dense base to ensure the adhesion of the ground.

2. Coating construction

The coating construction of epoxy floor includes multiple steps such as primer, intermediate coating and top coating. When applying in winter, the drying and curing of the coating will slow down due to lower temperatures. Therefore, the drying time of each layer of coating should be appropriately extended during construction, and ensure that each layer of coating is dry before proceeding with the construction of the next layer. At the same time, when applying the epoxy topcoat, it is necessary to ensure that the color of the coating is uniform and there is no leakage, see-through, pitting, etc.

3. Expansion joints and crack treatment

Expansion joints and cracks on the floor should be repaired with appropriate materials. During winter construction, the curing rate of the material will slow down due to lower temperatures. Therefore, when repairing expansion joints and cracks, the curing time of the repair material should be appropriately extended, and the repair material should be thoroughly dried before subsequent construction.

4. Post-construction maintenance

1. Maintenance measures

After construction is completed, the epoxy floor should be properly maintained. During winter construction, the curing speed of the floor will slow down due to lower temperatures. Therefore, during the maintenance period, you should pay close attention to the changes in the floor and take appropriate measures for maintenance. For example, items such as plastic film or paper can be laid on the surface of the floor to reduce the contact area between the floor and the air, thereby reducing the curing speed of the floor. At the same time, avoid dragging or scratching heavy objects on the floor surface to avoid scratches and damage.

2. Regular inspection

After construction is completed, the epoxy floor should be inspected and maintained regularly. During winter construction, the performance of the floor may be affected to a certain extent due to lower temperatures. Therefore, when inspecting, you should focus on whether the flatness, hardness, gloss and other indicators of the floor meet the requirements. If problems are found, they should be dealt with in time to ensure the long-term use of the floor.

5. Safety measures

1. Fire and explosion proof

Most of the materials used in the construction process of epoxy flooring are flammable and explosive materials. During construction in winter, due to low temperatures, workers may use equipment such as stoves or electric heaters to keep warm. At this time, special attention should be paid to fire and explosion prevention work, and dangerous behaviors such as lighting fires or smoking near the paint storage area should be avoided. At the same time, it should be ensured that the fire protection facilities in the construction area are intact and effective, and fire safety training should be conducted regularly for construction personnel.

2. Protective equipment

During the construction process, construction workers should wear appropriate protective equipment, such as gloves, masks, protective glasses, etc. These equipment can effectively reduce the impact of dust and harmful chemicals on construction workers. At the same time, the physical condition of construction workers should be paid close attention to during the construction process. If they feel unfit, stop construction and seek medical treatment in time.

6. Summary

Epoxy floor construction in winter faces many challenges, but through reasonable construction environment control, material preparation and proportioning, construction process control, and post-construction maintenance, the construction quality and effect can be ensured. At the same time, special attention should be paid to the implementation of safety measures during the construction process to ensure the safety and health of construction personnel. In short, winter epoxy floor construction requires care, patience and professional skills. Only in this way can a high-quality floor surface be created.
